The Authenticity Spectrum

When brand leaders talk about AI-generated content, they tend to describe it in binary terms: either it's good enough or it isn't. But there's actually a spectrum, and where you land on it matters more than whether you land on it at all.

The Spectrum Nobody Wants to Admit Exists

Authentic

Authentic content is created by humans who genuinely understand and feel the brand - people with enough institutional knowledge, cultural awareness, and plain good taste to make judgment calls that no style guide can fully capture. AI handles the operational layer beneath: distribution, formatting, localization, compliance. The human is at the center.

Authentic Adjacent

Authentic Adjacent content is AI-generated within well-defined guardrails, reviewed by humans before it goes out, and close enough to the real thing that most audiences can't tell the difference. Done well, this is a reasonable operating model. The human is still in the room - just no longer at the center.

Non-Authentic Derivative

Non-Authentic Derivative content is technically compliant. It clears the guardrails. It would pass a brand audit. And it's slowly, quietly draining the life out of your brand - because guardrail-approved is not the same as true. It's the brand speaking in its own approved vocabulary without actually having anything to say. The human isn't in the room anymore. And you can feel it - even if you can't yet measure it.

Most companies think they'll land on the second. Many will land on the third without realizing it.

Here's why it matters: Brand isn't a style guide. It's not a set of approved colors and CSS. It's a living thing - and like anything alive, it either grows or it decays. AI can model what Brand has been. It cannot sense what Brand needs to become.
